Protecting Us from Bigger Problems (again) 2017

In collaboration with Spencer Byrne-Seres.

Ever since Spencer and I started dating, I've been obsessed with slugs because of an incident with his computer in 2015 (see how we first addressed this problem here), turns out you can protect your self from slugs (among other things) using salt rings. This year I finished graduate school and accepted a year-long position at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. During the first project, I used a salt ring to protect grad students from debt and trauma, and this time, I wanted to protect the whole School of Art + Design (and the whole city of Portland). I wanted to say bye to Portland State with a protective salt ring around the art building, and Spencer suggested we draw a salt ring around the entire city of Portland as a parting gift for the city I've lived in five years. So, we drove around the city, starting downtown, through the west hills and Sellwood, over to 82nd Ave, next to the Columbia River, through St. Johns, down 30 until we got downtown again. We completed both rings with the leftover salt from the first salting project (which I kept in my studio throughout grad school).
